Digital Camera Batteries

By Wilbur Corncob at 04/16/07 12:39
A friend was going to send me some digital protos of a project he was working on. Unfortunately, he said the batteries were dead and he would have to send the photos another time.

That reminded of my first digital camera. It used regular alkaline batteries. It was an exercise in frustration. Seemed like I want changing batteries more often than I was snaping photos.

Not long ago I had a Sony digital camera that used rechargable AA batteries. This was almost as bad. You certainly couldn't take a memory stick full of photos on a battery charge. With two sets of batteries it was almost usable.

I currently have a Sony digital camera that uses a little lithium battery cartridge. Before a recent trip to Brazil I purchased an extra battery, the price almost knocked me over around US$50.

The fact is I could have gotten along well in Brazil with just the original battery. I get tired of taking photos before the battery is run down. Unfortunately the camera won't turn on property with the non-sony batter and sometimes I have to turn it on 4 or 5 times till it works.

A real UPS

By Wilbur Corncob at 04/08/07 09:26
I hate UPSs, they are a necessary evil, but usually run out battery power way too soon, and the included batteries often lose their viablity after a year or two.

That's why I like this Austrialan's website:

Upgrade your UPS! (with some car batteries...)

If you've got a UPS that runs from some variety of gel cell that you can't easily buy locally, the odds are very good that it'll also run A-OK from some other lead acid battery with the same terminal voltage (which almost always means one 12V battery for smaller UPSes, and two 12V batteries in series for bigger ones).

He explains the options for using various batteries including car batteries on your UPS.
