Extended Play – Getting the Most From Your Laptop Battery

By SuperCharged at 06/13/09 19:54

It's no secret that laptop batteries lose their charge overtime, leaving users in a constant search for new power outlets. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to ensure the longevity of your laptop's power source. Below are five easy ways to preserve:

  1. Close unnecessary programs. Between iTunes, multiple web browsers, anti-virus software, and messaging services batteries can get overworked, which cuts life dramatically. Try to close all programs that aren't required at the time to cut back on battery demands.

  2. Run programs off your hard drive instead of a CD/DVD drive. CD/DVD drives spin and suck power even when they're not actively in use. If it's going to be a few hours between access to a plug in be sure to download required programs to your C: drive.

  3. Hibernate VS Standby. Don't get me wrong, putting your laptop on standby will conserve power compared to its regular operation. But taking advantage of the hibernation function will save you even more.

  4. Turn off auto-save functions. Programs like Microsoft Word will intermittently save your current program. While this is a novel feature, if your battery is running low you'll want to turn it off to conserve.

  5. Defrag your Hard Drive. Not only will this improve battery life, it will improve speed. By putting less demand on your hard drive this is a true win-win.

No matter how many preventative measures you take to conserve battery life, you'll eventually need a replacement. For a laptop with regular use, it's a good idea to replace your power source every 2-3 years. Many laptop batteries, like the F4812A, are both inexpensive and easy to replace.

Your relationship with your laptop's battery may not last forever, but with a little preventative maintenance at least it can be a long one. Visit PriorityElectronics.com for more tips about laptop battery maintenance.
