Q&A: Lithium battery information

By Blog Answers at 01/11/09 04:48

On 08/30/08 17:31, richard asked the following question:

where is the lithium located in a lithium battery?

What spec does the lithium need to be and does this change with different batteries?

Would the designers of the battery order the lithium or the bulk manufactures?

thank you

Answer #1 On 01/10/09 08:16, Energizer from answered:

Lithium batteries are kinds of disposable batteries that uses lithium metals or lithium compounds as anode. (Source: Wikipedia) When we say anode, these are most of the time the positive side of the batteries. However, not all anodes are positive. Basically we can say that the anode of the lithium battery is where the lithium is located.

Perhaps the reason why Lithium batteries are so popular nowadays is because of the voltage that it can give. It can produce a total of 1.5 V to about 3.7 V, almost twice higher than the voltage obtained from a regular zinc-carbon battery or alkaline cell.

I don't exactly know how battery companies obtain their lithium but I do know that lithiums are to be mined, and of course, only mining companies have the capability to do that, so I would say these companies sell their mined lithiums to battery manufacturers. Although lithium is a naturally occurring salt, looking for it is very hard and can only be found in a number of stable mineral or salt areas such as Kings Mountain, North Carolina and in the salt desert in the Andes Mountains of Chile. A little amount of lithium can be found in the human body but has no known use or function.
