My five year old daughter recently had a birthday party. She was allowed to invite her class from school and we went the the skating rink. I tried to make it clear to parents that a gift really wasn't necessary as she already got presents from myself and her grandparents on her actual birthday during the week.Apparently no one got the memo though because every child came armed with a brightly colored package. Oh well, no big deal.
We had a good time skating and eating cupcakes. Everything was going smoothly until it came time to open the presents. The first gift she opened was a microphone that you could press buttons on and it would sing and she could sing along. It required batteries. She was pretty upset she couldn't play with it immediately.
To add to the drama, every gift she got after that required batteries! We tried to explain the concept of batteries to her but she really didn't understand why none of her gifts would work.
It turned out OK because she and her friends played with the stuff anyways. Moral of the story though, bring batteries to the next birthday party!
