This morning when I came into my office, one of my UPS's (uninterruptible power supply) that was attached to a server and a hub was making a really obnoxious noise like a high pitched whine.Since the servers are necessary in the function of my business, I always keep a spare battery backup here just in case one has an issue and I can switch it out so my servers are always protected against turning off during a surge or power outage.
Well, I went to the supply area and grabbed my spare UPS and took it out of the box. In case you don't know...you have to open the back cover to attach the ground wire to the terminal on the side of the battery before the battery backup will work in that capacity.
Much to my dismay, I found that whomever made the unit actually did not make the cable on the ground wire long enough to actually REACH the terminal on the battery!!! There is no way to make it reach. None. I was so mad..not only because the thing was defective, but because now I had to sit in my office all morning listening to that horrible noise before I could go get another one!
You know, I think what made me madder than anything was the fact that there is a sheet of paper taped to the side of every uninteruptable power supply made by APC that shows where it passed all of their testing stages. How the #**&^% did it pass any tests when the battery could not possibly have been hooked up???
When I took it back to Staples, they were as baffled as I was and spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how I was just an idiot and was doing it wrong. Well, after giving the old college try, they gave up too.
Makes me seriously wonder whether these things ARE actually tested or if those testing results are all bogus. There were even initials at the bottom of the list for the supposed person who performed the tests to sign off.
